Promotion of the utilization of GPU

Environment
Diagram showing the locations of APU and GPU installations. The GPU emits about 1/15th of the CO2 compared to the APU (for Boeing 777).

We will contribute to the promotion of the decarbonization of Tokyo metropolitan airports through the promotion of the use of GPU.

GPU (Ground Power Unit)

When parked in the apron, aircraft can secure necessary power and air conditioning functions by using a small-sized engine called an auxiliary power unit (APU) equipped in the aircraft, even when the main engine is stopped. However, because the use of APU causes noise, while also emitting greenhouse gas and air pollutants, Narita International Airport restricts the use of APU, and instead promotes the use of GPU. GPU supplies power and air conditioning function from ground facilities, and can reduce not only noise but also greenhouse gas and air pollutants emissions.

Currently, GPU is already installed in all fixed spots of Passenger Terminals 1 and 2. GPU is also installed in most of the spots in Passenger Terminal 3 and in the cargo area (all electric power only).
