We are promoting the 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) of wastes.
Efforts in waste treatment and recycling
Among the general wastes generated in Narita Airport, wastes taken off aircraft account for the largest portion, about half of the total. Among these wastes, residues of in-flight meals are required by law to be incinerated for quarantine reasons. As for other wastes taken off from aircraft, in-flight magazines, bottles, cans, and PET bottles are sorted and recycled by some air carriers, even though there are severe restrictions such as narrow space for sorting inside aircraft, and a short time available for cleaning inside the aircraft.
On the other hand, general wastes generated from passenger terminal buildings, and facilities in cargo areas and office areas, are also sorted into bottles, cans, PET bottles, etc., and those recyclable are recycled. From FY2015, garbage boxes for liquid are installed in the space before going through security check, where the discard rate of PET bottles that contain leftovers is high, with an aim to reduce general waste and improve the recycling rate of PET bottles.
