An Archival Work from the 40,000 SKY COLORS Project

Narita International Airport Corporation is committed to creating memorable, Narita‑unique passenger experiences by enhancing the value of the journey through art.

As part of this initiative, the co‑created art installation “SORA‑NOREN,” which embodies the thoughts and individuality of 100 diverse airport staff who support Narita Airport, will be exhibited within the airport.

The 40,000 SKY COLORS Project

At Narita Airport, approximately 40,000 staff members support air travel every day. We wanted to share with airport visitors the thoughts and feelings each of these individuals holds as they engage with the sky.

The “40,000 SKY COLORS Project” is an initiative that visualizes the passion and emotions of airport staff through each person’s “memorable sky color.” Staff members from a wide range of roles and positions weave together their unforgettable sky colors and the stories behind them, creating a rich tapestry of personal memories and experiences.

“SORA‑NOREN”

This exhibition is a spatial artwork created as part of the 40,000 SKY COLORS Project. Traditionally used in temples and other places for centuries, noren are fabric dividers that gently separate inside from outside while softly allowing light, air, and the presence of people to pass through.

In much the same way, an airport—while marking the boundary between domestic and international worlds—continuously welcomes countless encounters and exchanges, making it a place that can be seen as a giant noren.

“SORA‑NOREN” stands at this boundary, serving as a medium through which visitors can glimpse the memorable sky colors of airport staff. The space‑filling installation of 100 noren panels is dyed in the individual “memorable sky colors” chosen by each airport staff member, bringing together their personal memories into a shared landscape.

Highlights of the Exhibition

Looking up at the noren is an invitation to re‑experience the skies once gazed upon by airport staff. Passing through the noren, in turn, becomes a gateway to the stories held within each sky color.Through the memories and emotions embedded in these colors, visitors are invited to sense the presence and dedication of the people who support Narita Airport every day—offering a new and immersive airport experience.
