Can I bring 500ml bottled juice, tea, and mineral water on the plane?

[International flight] You may not carry 500 ml-bottles of juice, tea, or mineral water on the plane as they are subject to restrictions on carry-on liquids. However, you can bring on the plane bottles of juice, etc. you purchased at duty-free shops and other stores after undergoing security screening and completing departure procedures. Please check the following for further information.

As a souvenir for my trip to Japan I purchased a sword (or a replica of a sword), a wooden sword, nunchucks, ninja throwing stars, or other similar weapon replicas. Can I bring these on board the aircraft?

[Common] Any kind of item that could be used as a weapon, such as swords (including imitation swords), cannot be brought into the cabin. Please put them in checked baggage.* This also applies to air guns, knives, box cutters, imitation swords, wooden swords, nunchaku, shuriken (throwing knives), sword-like umbrellas, and any other items that look like weapons.

Can I bring inhaler medication and a canister for asthma (a device that sprays out medicine in a mist for inhalation when pressed by hand) on board?

[Common] Inhaled asthma drugs and inhalers are categorized as pharmaceuticals and they can be brought in carry-on baggage only up to the amount to be used in the cabin. Please put them in checked baggage for the amount beyond what you will use in the cabin. (*) When you bring them in carry-on baggage, you can undergo security screening smoothly by showing a document issued by a hospital to certify your condition.

I plan to bring a baton as a souvenir from Japan. Can I carry it onto the plane?

[Common] Carrying a baton into the cabin is prohibited as it is classified as a weapon-like item. We ask that you place it in your suitcase or similar items and check it in at the counter.

Is it possible to bring a blood pressure monitor and a blood glucose meter on board?

[Common] Carrying blood pressure monitors and glucose monitors on board is allowed.

I want to take a body spray, can I put it in my checked luggage?

[Common] A high-pressure gas spray is categorized as a dangerous good and prohibited from being brought on the plane. However, some types of body spray are permitted to be put in checked baggage. Please check the following for further information.

Can I put canned beer in my checked luggage? I understand that I can't bring it on board, but is there also a restriction on checked luggage?

[International flight] As canned beer is subject to the restrictions on carry-on liquids, you cannot bring it in carry-on baggage but you can put it in your suitcase to be checked at the check-in counter. Can I bring an inverter (a transformer used in a car to convert direct current from the battery to 100V AC) into the cabin?

[Common] You are allowed to bring a transformer into the cabin.

I want to include mentaiko in my carry-on luggage. Is that possible? Since it's not a liquid, would that be okay?

[International flight] You can bring mentaiko (seasoned cod roe) in carry-on baggage as it is not subject to the restrictions on carry-on liquids. However, mentaiko containing much liquid may be subject to the quantitative restrictions on liquids. Please check the following for further information.

Are there any differences in the carry-on restrictions for hand luggage that is brought into the cabin and items placed in a suitcase?

[Common] Yes. There are two types of baggage: carry-on baggage that passengers bring into the cabin, and checked baggage that passengers check at the check-in counter. Carry-on baggage is inspected from the perspective of whether it contains any item that can be used as a weapon, for the purpose of preventing hijacking. Checked baggage is inspected from the perspective of whether it contains goods prohibited from transport, such as explosives. Thus, knives and air guns are prohibited in carry-on baggage as they could be used as weapons, but they are permitted in checked baggage.

I am going to New York. Can I put a chisel in the trunk that I am going to check in?

[Common] Chisels are prohibited in carry-on baggage. Please put them in checked baggage.

Can I bring contact lens solution into the cabin?

[International flights] Contact lens solution is also treated as a medicine, so it can be brought into the cabin. However, it is limited to the amount you use on the plane, so please check in the rest in your suitcase.

I bought some fresh sweets as a gift for a friend living overseas. I need to keep it cool, so I want to use dry ice. Can I bring dry ice on the plane?

[Common] You can put dry ice both in carry-on baggage and checked baggage for the purpose of cooling perishable food including fresh sweets. While passengers are allowed to bring dry ice up to 2.5 kg per person in principle, airlines may set different limits or require labeling. For details, please inquire with your airline.

Can I put electrical cords and dry batteries in my suitcase to check in as luggage?

[Common] Different restrictions apply to batteries depending on their type. There is no restriction on lithium-ion batteries embedded in products such as computers, digital cameras, and mobile phones. However, backup lithium-ion batteries should be brought in carry-on baggage (up to two pieces). Other batteries, such as alkaline batteries, are permitted in carry-on baggage and checked baggage. A friend of mine who runs a Japanese restaurant in America asked me to bring some empty jars for pickling. I would like to carry them as hand luggage on the plane as there's a risk they might break if I check them in. Would they be deemed hazardous?

[Common] Empty bottles are not regarded as dangerous goods and they are permitted in carry-on baggage. However, different restrictions apply depending on the airline in terms of the number and weight of baggage. Please confirm with your airline.

My father is traveling alone with a child. Is there a process for bringing in frozen breast milk and ice packs for a newborn baby?

[International flights] Breast milk is treated the same as medication, so it can be brought on board, limited to the quantity needed for the flight, if you are traveling with an infant. You may also bring a cooling agent, but only if it is packaged with the breast milk. During the inspection, please declare them separately from your carry-on luggage to the inspector.

Can I bring a game console into the cabin? Also, if it's possible, please provide any precautions or points to keep in mind.

[Common] Large game consoles (stationary types) can be brought into the cabin as long as they are put through the X-ray machine, similar to other carry-on luggage. However, during the security check, please separate it from other luggage and put it in a separate tray. Additionally, portable game consoles can also be brought into the cabin without any issues.

I will bring a gas type hair spray to set my hair. I don’t want to carry it on board, but I want to put it in my suitcase. Will that be okay?

[Common] A hair spray in a container with a capacity of not more than 0.5 kg or not more than 0.5 l is permitted to be put in checked baggage. Please check the following for further information.

How should I bring a hair curler?

[Common] In the case of a gas hair iron, if it is filled with hydrocarbon gas and the safety cover is firmly fixed to its heat source, it can be put in carry-on baggage and checked baggage, only one unit per person. Please note that you cannot put refill gas cartridges in carry-on baggage or checked baggage. You can put a plug-in hair iron both in carry-on baggage and checked baggage. You cannot put a rechargeable hair iron in carry-on baggage or checked baggage. However, you can put it both in carry-on baggage and checked baggage if the battery is detached. The detached battery or a backup lithium battery or lithium-ion battery can be brought only in carry-on baggage up to the limit per person. For more details, please inquire with your airline.

My 18-month-old son, who is allergic to eggs, can't eat the requested baby meal. May we bring home-prepared snacks? We're concerned as he can't stay unfed during the long flight.

[International flights] If your child's food is not liquid, you can bring it on board without any specific declaration. However, if it is in liquid form, such as baby's meals, you can bring it into the cabin only if you are accompanied by your child and it is limited to the quantity required in the cabin. Can insect repellent sprays and women's antiperspirant sprays be put in a suitcase?

[Common] You can bring antiperspirant sprays and insect repellent sprays (to be applied directly to the skin) in checked baggage. Please check the following for further information.

I would like to bring insecticide to my study abroad destination. How should I do this?

[Common] Any kinds of insecticide, such as Varsan, which contains toxic substances, are prohibited in carry-on baggage and checked baggage. Please check the following for further information.

I would like to bring my insulin injections. Which would be better, carrying them on board or checking them in?

[International flight]For a smooth passage through security check, if you have a medical certificate or prescription, please present it to the security inspector. If you don’t have these documents, please inform the security inspector. Although there are regulations on the carry-on of liquids on international flights, medicines such as insulin are exceptions and may be carried into the cabin even without being in plastic bags. However, this is limited to the quantity to be used in the cabin, and we kindly ask you to place the rest in your suitcase.

I would like to take home a Japanese-made knife as a souvenir. How can I do this?

[Commons] Knives are prohibited in carry-on baggage. Please put them in checked baggage.

Can I bring a lighter on board the aircraft?

Lighters may be brought on board the aircraft, with a limit of one lighter per passenger. However, some types of lighters, such as turbo lighters, are prohibited. In addition, under no circumstances can lighters be placed inside checked baggage deposited with the airline at the check-in counter. (Note: Some flights, such as to/from China prohibit lighters in either carry-on or checked baggage. For more information, please contact your airline.)

The note in the prohibited items list says that you can bring one lighter or match per person on board. Does this mean I can bring one of each on board? Or am I only allowed one of either item per person?

[Common] You can bring only either one lighter or one box of matches on the plane. You should choose which you would bring it on the plane at the security checkpoint.

Can I put a souvenir lighter in my suitcase?

[Common] No lighter can be put in the suitcase to be checked at the check-in counter. Please carry a lighter with you and bring it into the cabin. There is a limit to the number of lighters that are permitted in carry-on baggage. While passengers are allowed to bring one lighter per person in principle, some airlines may prohibit any lighter from being brought on the plane. For details, please inquire with your airline.

Is there a quantity limit for liquid milk to be brought into the airplane cabin?

[International flights] Infant milk/food can be brought on board, limited to the quantity needed for the flight, if you are traveling with an infant. For a smooth inspection, please declare them separately from your carry-on luggage to the inspector. If you need to bring extras, please put them in the luggage to be checked in at the counter.

I will be connecting to another flight at Narita Airport. Can I bring liquids on board the aircraft?

[International flight] When passengers arriving on an international flight depart on an international flight without entering Japan, quantitative restrictions on liquids apply. Please note that you need to dispose of liquid beyond the limit at the security checkpoint for connection. If you connect to an international flight, please purchase liquids at the duty-free area of the final connection airport. This does not apply if you enter Japan and can put liquids in your checked baggage. You can bring liquids that you purchased at the duty-free shop in an overseas airport if they are put in Security Tamper-Evident Bags (STEBs) and determined as posing no problem through screening with liquid inspection equipment.

I am using a magnetic necklace. Can I bring it into the cabin? Or can I put it in my suitcase?

[Common] Magnetic necklaces generate strong magnetism as general-purpose magnets but they can be put in both carry-on baggage and checked baggage.Please check the following for further information.

I'm thinking of bringing a portable mini-game into the cabin. Can I bring travel ones with magnetic pieces such as Othello?

[Common] There are no restrictions on carrying magnets attached to portable travel Othello games, so it is permissible to bring them onboard the flight.

As a result of previous surgery, I have a metal implant in my body. I am concerned that it may set off the alarm when I go through the metal detector. What should I do?

Instead of going through the metal detector, you may choose to receive a pat-down inspection from a screener of the same gender. To facilitate smoother security screening, please show the screener your medical certificate or other supporting documents for your device. You may also inform the screener that you have a metal implant for medical reasons. (Note: This also applies to passengers using wheelchairs who cannot pass through metal detectors.)

My daughter is heading to Narita and I am thinking of giving her miso as a souvenir. A friend told me that “you can't take miso on the plane“ is that true?

[International flight] Miso is categorized as liquid and subject to the restrictions on carry-on liquids. Please put it in checked baggage. If you need to bring it on the plane, store it in a container with a capacity of not more than 100 ml and then put it into a transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a capacity of not more than 1 liter, according to the rules on the restrictions on carry-on liquids. I bought a model gun as a souvenir. I'd like to bring it overseas, but am I able to do this?

[Common] Toy guns are categorized as items similar to weapons and prohibited in carry-on baggage. Please put them in checked baggage. Some airlines do not permit them to be put in checked baggage. For details, please inquire with your airline.

There is a musical saw instrument called "Myoubical Saw". Can I bring it onboard? It's sold at a music store so I think it might be okay...

[Common] Regarding the "Musical Saw", even though it is a musical instrument, it cannot be taken into the cabin as it is classified as a weapon-like item due to its saw shape. Please check it in at the counter as baggage.

I'd like to bring an oxygen canister for mountain climbing/sports, is it okay to do so?

[Common] Oxygen cylinders other than those for medical purposes are not permitted in carry-on baggage or checked baggage.

Is it possible to bring oil paints on board, either as a carry-on or checked luggage?

[International flight] Oil paints are subject to the restrictions on carry-on liquids. Oil paints are permitted in carry-on baggage if they are stored in a container with a capacity of 100 ml (g) and put into a transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a capacity of not more than 1 liter. In other cases, they should be put in checked baggage. However, please note that the oil used to dissolve the paint that accompanies the oil paint set is classified as a dangerous good and it is prohibited both in carry-on baggage and checked baggage. Paints of some types of colors fall within the scope of goods prohibited from transport. For details, please confirm with your airline.

I want to bring over-the-counter Chinese herbal medicine on board, but I don't have a prescription as it's not prescribed. What should I do?

[Common] If the Chinese herbal medicine is liquid, please put it in a container of 100ml (g) or less, and put it in a transparent zippered plastic bag of 1 liter or less. Then present it separately from your carry-on luggage to the inspector. If the Chinese herbal medicine is not liquid, there are no restrictions on bringing it into the cabin. Also, there are no restrictions if you put it in checked luggage such as a suitcase.

I've heard that engines, such as those for radio-controlled toys, cannot be brought in, but what about the engine for Plarail?

[Common] Items such as remote-controlled helicopters, which contain hazardous substances in their operation parts, are treated as dangerous goods. However, Plarail model trains that operate on batteries (motors) are not problematic, so they can be brought onto the aircraft.

Can I bring a razor for shaving onboard? Even if I can't bring it into the cabin, will it be okay if it's in my suitcase?

[Common] Razors and other sharp objects are prohibited in carry-on baggage. Please put them in your suitcase to be checked at the check-in counter. Please check the following for further information.

I would like to take home the replica sword I bought as my hand luggage. How should I do this? The replica sword is not sharp and I have a hard case for storage.

[Common] Replica swords are categorized as items similar to weapons and prohibited in carry-on baggage. Please put them in checked baggage. Details may vary depending on the airline. Please inquire with your airline.

I understand that razors for shaving are considered sharp objects and cannot be brought on board. However, are shaving creams and gels (hair styling products) that are used at the same time also items that cannot be brought on board?

[International flight] Shaving cream and hair gel are subject to the restrictions on carry-on liquids. Please follow the rules if you bring them in carry-on baggage, or put them in checked baggage. Please check the following for further information.

Can I bring my everyday medicines (solid or liquid) onto the aircraft?

To help facilitate a smoother security screening, please inform the screener if you have a medical certificate or prescription for your medicine. If you do not have such supporting documents, please show your medicine passbook or medicine instruction guide, or inform the screener. Please note that you can only carry on the amount you will need during the flight. (Medicines and other medical products are exempt from restrictions on quantities of liquids, but must undergo security screening.)

I'm taking my 5-month-old baby on a trip. Is it okay to bring a thermos filled with hot water for dissolving powdered milk into the cabin? I heard that baby items are not subject to liquid carry-on restrictions...

[International flights] Baby milk/baby food is exempt from liquid carry-on restrictions. Please pass the check point with your infant. After we confirm the hot water for the powdered milk in the thermos, you are allowed to bring it into the cabin.

It seems that lighters can be restricted, but can I bring cigarettes as carry-on luggage into the cabin?

[Common] Cigarettes can be carried onboard the plane as hand luggage.

Can a toy gun (with metal parts) be brought into the cabin or as checked luggage?

[Common] Regarding toy guns, they cannot be brought into the cabin as they are considered similar to weapons, so please put them in the luggage you check in at the counter.

The size of the clear plastic bag with a zipper for liquids is 24cm x 17cm. Is this size okay? Also, is it okay if there are pictures and words written on the zippered plastic bag?

[International flight] In the rules for carrying liquids, it is specified as a transparent, resealable plastic bag with a zipper and capacity of 1 liter, less than 20 cm on all sides. However, a bag of 24 cm x 17 cm size also has a sum of about 40 cm in both directions, so it is allowed if it's a transparent vinyl bag with a zipper. Bags with pictures or text are also allowed as long as the bag is transparent and the contents can be visually checked. However, in order to ensure a smooth inspection, we ask you to use a bag with minimal pictures and text.

There are various types of lighters, but if I only have one, can I bring any type of lighter?

[Common] Lighters that can be brought on the plane are disposable lighters and oil lighters. Oil lighters that are permitted in carry-on baggage are limited to those having absorbents in the tank. Oil tank lighter, cigar lighter, pre-mixing lighter (e.g., turbo lighter, jet lighter, and blue flame lighter) are not permitted in carry-on baggage. Is it possible to bring undeveloped film on board or check it with luggage?

[Common] As high-performance inspection equipment is used, undeveloped films may be exposed during security screening. Please bring them in carry-on baggage, instead of putting them in checked baggage.

Do wet tissues and makeup removal sheets fall under carry-on restrictions? What about lip balm and lipstick?

[International flight] Wet wipes and makeup remover wipes are not subject to the restrictions on carry-on liquids and can be brought in carry-on baggage. Lip balm and lip rouge are permitted in carry-on baggage as they are not subject to the restrictions on carry-on liquids if they are solid. Please check the following for further information.

I am using a magnetic necklace. Can I bring it into the cabin? Or would it be alright to put it in my suitcase?

[Common] You are allowed to bring commercially sold walking canes onto the airplane. For any other items that are excessively long, please consult with the airline.

I would like to bring a boxed yogurt to eat on the plane. Are there any restrictions?

[International flight] Yogurt is categorized as liquid and subject to the restrictions on carry-on liquids. Please put yogurt in checked baggage. If you need to bring it on the plane, store it in a container with a capacity of not more than 100 ml and then put it into a transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a capacity of not more than 1 liter, according to the rules on the restrictions on carry-on liquids.
